Most designers specialize early. I took the opposite route, and it turned out to be the more useful one.

At the City of San Jose I art-directed the Environmental Services Department's 2017 Annual Report and built campaign systems seen across a city of a million residents. At TJKM Transportation Consultants I was the only designer supporting a multi-office engineering firm — turning traffic studies and infrastructure plans into proposals that non-technical readers could actually follow. At Sacred Heart Community Service I made fundraising and campaign work stretch on nonprofit budgets.

For the past four years at Zip2Print I've worked alongside a press. Brand identities and collateral, yes — but also prepress, proofing and vendor coordination. That changed how I design. I build files that behave, and I can tell a client what something will cost and how long it will take before we commit.

Design that can't be produced isn't finished. It's a proposal.
